Description

If photography consists of capturing the visible things in front of us, I began to think about what to do with the invisible things. As a result, I ended up with a work in which only the face was framed out of the full-body portrait. The fate of the invisible face is left to the relationship between the imagination and memory of the person who sees the photograph. That ambiguity seemed to fit perfectly with my own insecurities at the time.
As for the shooting method, first decide on a frame that contains the whole body of the subject, shift down the camera by the size of the face, and push the face out of the upper part of the frame. Therefore, an unstable space was captured from the bottom down.
In 1972, I published the work “untitled” in “Camera Mainichi”, which was my substantial debut. The title was decided by Shoji Yamagishi, who was the editor-in-chief of the magazine at the time.
